.:CARRIAGE HOUSE:.

This carriage house was a design/build concept to experiment with recycled building materials from prior renovated homes that were remodeled by Houseworks Construction. This design won the Chrysalis Award for Best Detached Outbuilding for 2003 under $100,000. Location in Atlanta, Georgia.

This design/build was the 1 st stage of construction of our Vista Trail Remodel for 2004. The concept was to use as many recycled components as possible, and alternative products, so as to keep cost down, but maintain high-energy efficiency and low maintenance.

Available prior to construction were numerous interior and exterior doors, insulated glass panel windows and double hung windows, all inventoried from other construction jobs. All the existing windows and doors are from 6 other construction/ remodel jobs! The kitchen was built from cabinet components originating from a 1950’s kitchen. The kitchen countertops were made with cast concrete, and kitchen components such as the 1980’s Sub Zero refrigerator were installed from collected inventory. First floor pavement material is stained concrete, and second floor pavement material is finished with ¾” maple veneer plywood, cut into 12” strips and mechanically screwed to the floor. All bathroom materials were such as the Phillip Stark faucets, bidet, and toilet, as well as slate material for the shower and bath area, again recycled, and was incorporated into this design/build.
